Art History Syllabus
Course Description: An art history course will
provide an understanding and knowledge of architecture, sculpture,
painting, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural
contexts. Students will learn to look at works of art critically,
with intelligence and sensitivity, and to analyze what they see.
We will include in this course the direct study of original works
of art in local collections. The time span will cover the Ancient
through the Medieval, discuss art beyond European traditions (Africa,
the Near East, the Americas, Oceania, and global Islamic tradition)
and deal with the Renaissance to the Present. Assessments will be
through multiple-choice questions, long and short essay questions
and comparisons of works of art as well as classroom participation
and projects.
Course Objective: Students in this course will
be taught to reflect an understanding of elements of art, terminology
and technical processes as well as works of art in context.
Course Requirements: Tests, projects and class
participation
Criteria for Assessing Student Performance:
Grades are based on total points possible divided by total points
earned. For example, if in a marking period, there were 4 tests,1
project, 8 weekly homework grades, and the participation grade,
the total possible would be 900. If a student earned 700 points,
the average would be 78.
Tests 100 possible points each
Projects 100 possible points each
Class Participation 200 points per quarter
Homework 25 points each
