Business Services Syllabus
Course Description: This course is designed to introduce
students to a variety of career opportunities in the financial services
industry and to use business related computer software to accomplish
career-related tasks.
Course Objective:
Level 1 students in this course will be taught Microcomputer Applications,
primarily Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with an opportunity to achieve
official Microsoft Certification. Students will also be given an overview
of the Financial Services industry with an emphasis on Personal Financial
Planning.
Level 2 students in this course will be taught Accounting concepts
and procedures, Quickbooks accounting software, basic tax preparation,
Banking and Credit activities, an introduction to Microsoft Access,
and Stock and Bond operations in the Securities Industry. Advanced
techniques in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are presented with an opportunity
to achieve official Microsoft Certification.
Level 3 students in this course will operate the Hawk’s nest
school store including advertising, selling, and producing financial
records in Quickbooks; and use business software to manage yearbook
sales and commercial ad sales. Advanced software techniques, Web page
design using Macromedia software, and investment topics are also included.
Course Requirements: Students are required to pass
at least one Microsoft Office Certification test, complete three business
related technical papers, and generate finance projects using business
software.
Criteria for Assessing Student Performance:
Classwork & Projects 35% MS Office documents, projects related
to the
Financial industry including the Stock Market
Game and a Personal Budget.
Quizzes 20% Sustained Silent Reading Summaries, MS
Office software task assessments.
Tests 35% Finance & software tests; Technical Papers.
Class Participation 10% Work readiness, discussion participation,
attendance, and on-time to class.
