Course Description: "The Properties of Matter
Are a Consequence of its Structure" is the
central theme of this Chemistry, College Prep course. The course begins
with an examination
of the entire enterprise of chemistry working into problem solving,
measurement principles,
mathematical techniques, and a classification system for matter. Course
work includes atomic
theory, nuclear and atomic structure, the classification of atoms
and the mole which prepares
students to begin quantitative laboratory work. The periodic table,
atomic combinations of
molecules and ions of different kinds will be considered .
Course Objective: Chemistry CP will allow students
to investigate and learn what the world
around them is made up at the molecular level and how these particles
react with each other.
Through investigation, intuition and analysis these students will
be able to come to scientific
conclusions and theories.
Course Requirements: Students will need to successfully
complete all tests, quizzes, homework
and lab activities. All labs will need to be completed with a formal
lab write-up. All students will
need to participate in the Science Fair. All students will need to
complete a midterm but have
an opportunity to be exempt from the final. A student can be exempt
by receiving 3 A’s and
1 B for the 4 MP’s. Recommended course prerequisites: Algebra
I with a minimum of a B in
the course.
Criteria for Assessing Student Performance:
Tests 30% chapter tests
quizzes 20% quiz for chapter
homework 20% chapter reviews at the end of each chapter
labs 20% lab data collected and questions answered from text
participation 10% prepared for class, answering questions, not being
late
