The Certified Dental Assisting Program trains students to be a part
of the dental health care team. The program includes clinical duties,
chair side assisting, use of dental materials, dental radiography,
collecting and recording, clinical data, preventive dentistry, nutritional
counseling and sterilization techniques. Students receive on-the-job
training in local dental offices as well as the U.S. Coast Guard
Dental Clinic and the Wildwood Dental Health Clinic.
The mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
laws and regulations are an integral part of this curriculum. Students
are actively involved in the Cape-Atlantic Dental Assistants Association
for the three-year period which provides networking opportunities
with dentists, hygienists and assistants in the field.
Students also participate in preventive dentistry demonstrations
in local schools. After graduation, students will be ready for entry-level
positions after they pass the University of Medicine and Dentistry
of New Jersey (UMDNJ) subject specific exam or they can go on to
the post-secondary educational institution of their choice. Students
over the age of 18 can return to the dental program to take their
Certified Dental Assisting and radiology examinations.
