English 9 - College Prep
Students of English 9 College Prep will become proficient in reading
comprehension, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and writing through
their study of literature. These skills will be developed through
reading and/or media presentation of eclectic novels, short stories,
poetry including the classical epic, essays, biographies and drama.
Students will gain proficiency in using "the writing process" throughout
the curriculum. Additionally they will review and/or learn new grammar
skills as indicated through writing assignments.
English 9 - Honors
This course is a college prepatory class for first year high school
students that covers the requirements of English 9. It is designed
with the college bound student in mind, focusing on organization,
study & test taking skills in addition to the study of genres in
literature.
English 10 - College Prep
This course is designed to provide 1oth grade students with an expanded
knowledge of subjects and concepts introduced in the English 9 class.
Various mediums of the language will be utilized, with a general
emphasis on literary form. Genres including poetry, drama, the short
story and novels will be examined in the contexts of comprehension,
form, grammar, and thought processes. Students will develop the
writing skills necessary to present critical thinking on each of
these issues. Technology will be an integral part of the learning
and writing process.
English 10 - Honors
The purpose of this course is to provide the continuation of instruction
in English skills for those tenth grade students who plan to attend
college. Critical competencies in all discourse areas will be developed
with strong emphasis on the critical analysis of literary forms.
The course will be thematic in approach, and writing will be explored
as a process. Students will be encouraged to work independently
and collaboratively. The course will provide the student with an
overview of literary genres of varying length and complexity. These
forms will include essays, biographies, autobiographies, poetry,
drama, the short story and the novel. These genres will presented,
looked at, and analyzed in thematic, social, and historical contexts.
Also, vocabulary and preparation for the HSPA will be included.
The use of technology, both as a learning resource and in writing,
will be implemented on a regular basis.
English 11 - College Prep
English 11 CP is designed to instruct students in an overview of
American literature from a chronological and thematic perspective.
Through reading themes which are universal and timeless, students
are encouraged to become better in touch with themselves. Emphasis
will be on students' identification, comprehension, and interpretation
of the following literary genres presented chronologically: formal
and informal essays, sermons, historical documents, speeches, short
stories, poetry, and drama. In addition to literature, the course
covers writing and vocabulary using an integrated approach as well
as HSPT preparation and review. Using the Internet and CD Roms will
aid the students to complete creative projects and to find information
for research topics. Throughout the year, students will work on
improving sentence writing by combining sentences and improving
sentence style. These areas will be worked on in conjunction with
preparing for the HSPT and in conjunction with writing assignments.
Students will also learn new vocabulary words from each piece of
literature read; these words, their parts of speech and their definitions
will be kept in student notebooks.
English 11 - Honors
This course is designed to provide college-bound students an inferential
and in-depth overview of American literature from a chronological
perspective. Emphasis is on the implementation and comprehension
of formal essays, sermons, historical documents, speeches, short
stories, poetry, drama, and the novel within a thematic and historical
framework. In addition to literature, the course includes vocabulary,
writing from an integrated approach, and HSPA review and preparation.
Technology, especially CD-ROMS, the Internet, and PowerPoint presentations,
are used to facilitate research and to complete projects.
English 12 - College Prep
English 12 provides a continuation of instruction in English skills
to seniors. They read and interpret both orally and in writing Romantic,
Victorian and Modern World and American short stories, poetry, novels
and plays. They use the narrative, descriptive, persuasive, expressive,
poetic and workplace modes. The 12th grader recognizes and defines
problems, realizies that a decision is to be made and uses supporting
evidence, concrete details, personal experience, prior knowledge,
and the mastery of correct mechanics and grammar to apply appropriate
solutions. They use technology, current data, ethical, moral, and
diversified decision-making related to the increasing use of technologies,
bringing them into the 21st century.
English 12 - Honors
12th grade English CP provides a continuation of instruction in
English skills to seniors. They read and interpret both orally and
in writing Romantic, Victorian, Modern World and American short
stories, poetry, novels and plays. We use the narrative, descriptive,
persuasive, expressive, poetic and workplace modes. The 12th grader
recognizes and defines the problems, clarifies that a decision is
to be made and uses supporting evidence, concrete details, personal
experience, prior knowledge and mastery of correct mechanics and
grammar to apply appropriate solutions. All students will be able
to demonstrate employment skills, prepare a resume, complete a job
application and possess the skills and attitudes necessary for a
successful job interview. The 12th grade English CP students analyze
how the works of the given period reflect historical and social
conditions. They understand appropriate literary concepts such as
logical fallacy, rhetorical devices, credibility of the author,
persuasive techniques and many more. They have an enriched vocabulary
building lesson each week. They evaluate classic novels in depth
using all current media technologies. Included is successful test
taking strategies, study skills, research paper, visual essay, intolerance
projects and all other language skills to succeed beyond high school
and into the 21st century.
ENGLISH ELECTIVES
Drama
This course is designed for students who have an interest in all
forms of the art: speaking, acting, set and costume design, and
presentation. Various mediums such as theater, television, and motion
pictures will be utilized, studied, and analyzed. Students will
learn about the evolution of drama from classical theater to television.
The use of technology as an integral part of presentation will be
examined.
Journalism
This elective English course is designed to explore journalism from
all aspects, focusing on the newspaper as a primary written form
of mass communication. The Journalism course focuses on skills and
techniques that relate to news gathering, news writing, and news
layout. On-going developement of skills in reading, writing, grammar,
interviewing, and listening will be emphasized. Finally, incorporation
of all the skills learned--literary, technical, and ethical will
result in the production of The Hawk's Eye, the school publication.
The course is designed for the student with an interest in a career
in journalism or the student interested in working on a school newspaper,
yearbook or literary magazine, or one in a communications technical
area. The course emphasizes technical skills involved in newspaper
production, copy editing, layout, artwork, photography, and computer
deadline. The course is also designed to help improve writing, listening,
and interpretive skills for college bound students.
Creative Writing
This course in the writing of poetry and the short story, uses a
workshop format. Works by other writers are studied in the light
of basic principles of form: including parodies, spoofs, dramatic
writing and soap opera. |
