English 10 Honors Syllabus
Course Description: Critical competencies in all
discourse areas will be developed with strong
emphasis on the critical analysis of literary forms. The course will
be thematic in approach, and
writing will be explored as a process. Students will be encouraged
to work independently and
collaboratively. The course will provide the student with an overview
of literary genres of varying
length and complexity. These forms will include essays, biographies,
autobiographies, poetry,
drama, the short story and the novel. These genres will be presented,
looked at, and analyzed in
thematic, social, and historical contexts. Also, vocabulary and preparation
for the HSPA will be
included. The use of technology, both as a learning resource and in
writing, will be implemented
on a regular basis.
Course Objective: The purpose of this course is to
provide the continuation of instruction in
English skills for those tenth grade students who plan to attend college.
Course Requirements:
1. Understand and interpret, orally and in writing, literary selections
using the narrative,
descriptive, persuasive, expressive, transactional, and poetic modes.
2. Write for a specific audience and purpose using supporting evidence,
concrete details,
personal experience, and prior knowledge.
3. Show mastery of correct mechanics and grammar in the expository,
persuasive, and
exploratory modes.
4. Follow and use directions.
5. Use successful test taking strategies and study skills.
6. Access and use technology as a writing resource.
Criteria for Assessing Student Performance:
Tests 30% Tests are given after each chapter or concept completed.
Essays/Projects 30% There will be both formal and informal essays
assigned as well as
cooperative group projects.
Homework 20% Homework will be given every night in written and/or
reading form.
Class Participation/Quizzes 20% There will be SAT vocabulary quizzes
given on a regular
basis. Students will be expected to contribute to the overall development
of the class by
being prepared on a daily basis.
