Course Description: This course is designed to prepare
the student with the skills needed for an entry-level career in residential
heating/cooling technology, the electrical field, or the plumbing
field. All students desiring a career in any of the trades will be
placed into a job. Demand for these trades is and has been at a very
high level, with pay to match.
Course Objective: Students in this course will be
taught theory and practical applications of all four career areas:
Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electricity.
Course Requirements:
Theory: Each area of study has its own state or national code which
must be followed in that trade. The National Electrical Code and the
National Standard Plumbing Code, both adopted by New Jersey, are studied
and referenced throughout the course. Four research papers per year
are required of first and second year students, and a third year project
must be completed before graduation. This project is a comprehensive
presentation of plumbing, electrical, and heating/cooling applications
as required using a set of actual house plans.
Practical: All installations are practiced in the HCPE shop as they
are learned. A task list is kept and graded on each aspect of the
student’s progress.
Criteria for Assessing Student Performance:
Tests and Quizzes 25% Quizzes given every Friday, Test end of M.P.
Daily Grade 25% Includes safety, attitude, work habits.
Task List 50% All tasks required for each trade graded
